Week Beginning 1st June 2020
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e530d7″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Today we begin a new half term. Our topic for the half term is Shaping Up. This is a topic which integrates learning in science, PE and personal, health and social education. The children will learn about their bodies and how to stay healthy. This topic has particular relevance this year.[/dropshadowbox]
This week our learning will be as follows.
English
Spelling – Investigate homophones (two or more words with the same pronunciation but different spelling). Use the spell zone website for learning ideas and games.
https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/list-4651.htm
Grammar – Use the following lesson from bbc bitesize to learn about subordinating conjunctions.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrr8jhv
Narrative – Today we begin a new unit of work based on the book, Dream Big by Deloris Jordan.
Day 1 -Look at front cover of Dream Big by Deloris Jordan. Make notes on what you noticed (e.g author, type of book, subject of book, author). Write a sentence predicting what you think the book will be about.
Day 2- Listen to reading of first 5 pages of Dream Big. Has this changed your view of what the book will be about. Write some questions you would like to ask Michael.
Day 3 – Listen to reading of next pages of 6 Dream Big. What do you think Michael’s mum would say when Michael said he wanted to be a champion. If possible, act out the conversation between Michael and his mother Deloris with a member of your family. Now write out a conversation. Don’t forget to use inverted commas (speech marks).
Day 4 – Listen to the final reading of Dream Big. (Reading to follow). Look at the following quotes from Michael Jordan
- I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.
- Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.
- Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.
Think about your own dreams for the future. Write some sentences about your dreams and how you will make them happen.
Day 5 – Use the internet to find out about Michael Jordan. Make a spider diagram of key facts you have learned.
Reading
We are continuing to set appropriate leveled books for each child using Reading Planet. The child should use their first name as their log-in and their class name as their password (either Blackfriars or Waterloo). They will need the centre ID 211526. The website address is;
https://my.risingstars-uk.com/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Science
There is one more lesson on plants before moving on to work on the body. Use the following video clip to learn about how a plant transports water.
Continue to look after your plant and keep your diary up to date.
Topic
Start by watching this video clip.
Use the internet to find out about the spread of germs and why it is important to wash our hands and keep things clean. Make a hygiene poster to promote keeping things clean and washing hands.
RE
RE – Pentecost Sunday is on 31st May. Your child can find out about Pentecost using the PowerPoint below.
The children can then make a paper helicopter using either using the template below or by folding and cutting a plain piece of paper.
They can then using flame colours (red, yellow and orange) to decorate their helicopter. They will need something heavy (e.g a paper clip) for the bottom of their helicopter. We celebrate the children’s languages as part of their learning about Pentecost. How many languages can your child speak as they drop their helicopter?

I.C.T-This week have a go at coding geometric shapes
https://studio.code.org/s/artist/stage/1/puzzle/1
Art/Design and Technology-
L.O-I can design an Egyptian death mask-
Next week , we would like you to begin making an Egyptian god or goddess mask
This week I would like you to think about the design process by answering the following questions:
What materials will I need?
Which tools will I need?
Which tools and materials do I have available to me at home?
What do I want my final mask to look like?
What steps will I make to achieve my final design (instructions)
You might want to look at the following links to give you some ideas for which resources you could use to design and make a mask.
To have a go at making an Egyptian God or Goddess mask next week you could use:
A base mask for example found at https://www.poundland.co.uk/375664-cat-mask/
paper plates https://www.poundland.co.uk/90363-party-paper-plates-30-pack/
Cardboard and newspaper from your recycling bins
Or just paper and felt tip pens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXU3Vd-c5sk
History-L.O-To learn all about Egyptian gods and goddesses and begin to find out what the ancient Egyptians believed.
#Lesson Presentation Egyptian Gods
Ancient-Egyptian-Gods-Differentiated-Comprehension-Activity_ver_8
Use the first sheet of this comprehension to find out about an ancient Egyptian god or goddess. Then use the Egypt’s Got Talent sheet or a piece of paper to record all you have found out about your god or goddess to convince the judges yours is best. Could you use this god or goddess as the one you use for your mask design? If you want something extra to do you could do one of the comprehensions on the fact sheet to test your understanding.
Activity Sheet Ancient Egypt’s Got Talent
R.E-L.O-I know how the religion of Islam began
https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/foundation/how-did-the-religion-of-islam-begin-year-4-wk5-1
Complete the introductory quiz to test your previous knowledge. Then click on next activity or the green dots at the bottom of the page to move on to the lesson video. You will be making a timeline of the prophet Muhammed’s life. Remember not to draw pictures of Muhammed as this is seen as highly disrespectful.
Latin- This week as well as practising sentence construction, we are introducing prepositions (a word that describes the position of a person or thing in time or space, eg, under the table). See if you can fit them into the sentences in the exercise Latin Prepositions
Music- More songs to get you moving and feeling happy. This week features songs about kindness https://www.outoftheark.co.uk/ootam-at-home/
Time for a break- Feeling a bit stiff and frustrated? I tried doing some Tai Chi with Thomas to relax and stretch out. It feels a little strange and silly at first but once you get used to the movements it is really quite calming (we muted the video and played our own relaxing music choices)

We hope that all families also enjoy the bank holiday Monday. It is half term this week so we are not setting daily maths and English learning. However we have put together some activities. [/dropshadowbox]
Reading
It is great to see that so many children have been able to keep up with their reading. We have now set up accounts for the children on the Rising Stars website. This means we can access suitable leveled books for each child from the Reading Planet online library. There are comprehension questions that the children can answer at the end of each week and there are quizzes which the children can complete and gain awards. The child should use their first name as their log-in and their class name as their password (either Blackfriars or Waterloo). They will need the centre ID 211526. The website address is;
https://my.risingstars-uk.com/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f
Guidance can be found at;
Mathematics
The children have done great work on multiplication and division this week and should keep learning their times tables. The following websites will be useful;
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
The children should all have passwords for the mathletics and times tables rockstars sites. They can use their times tables rockstars site to access the numbots site.
Topic Work
After half term our topic is Shaping up. We will learn about our bodies and about how to keep fit. We will also learn about the basketball player Michael Jordan. Over the holiday children can find out about a sportsperson of their choice. They can then draw, paint or write sentences about their sportsperson or even make a model of them.
Science
Keep taking care of your plant and recording progress in your diary. Use the video lesson below to find out about the life cycle of a plant.

Week Beginning 18th May
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e7ed19″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]It is the last week of the Spring 1 half term already. It is lovely to see how well the children are working at home. We have seen some amazing learning.[/dropshadowbox]
This week our learning is as follows:
English
Spelling – learn the following spellings: interest, important, accident, believe, strange, reign.
Children who are in Violet group (Waterloo) or Toy Story group (Blackfriars) for English should work on: they, on, she, so, we, can.
All children should also revise the homophones there, their and they’re using the attached lesson from BBC bitesize daily.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zk2c92p
Information Texts – This week we will finish our research on Queen Boudicca and work towards creating an information leaflet. The children created information leaflets on volcanoes in February and these leaflets should be in a similar format.
- Day 1 – Think of two questions which would help you find out more about Queen Boudicca. Use the internet to find the answer to your questions. When you have done that look at the questions you wrote at the end of last week. Can you find out any more information that helps you answer those questions fully? - Day 2- Today you will draft the text of your information leaflet. Use the questions you wrote yesterday and last week as your sub-headings. Write your answer below each questions as fully as you can in sentences. Use your spider diagrams from last week and your research from yesterday. If you find spelling difficult remember to use your sounds. You can also ask an adult for some key spellings.
- Day 3 -Today you are going to proofread, edit and up-level your work. Start by following the lesson from BBC bitesize daily on using your proofreading skills.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zryxt39
When you have completed the lesson carefully proofread the text you wrote yesterday. Edit and up-level your text. Remember if you aiming to be a greater depth writer you should be thinking carefully about the effect of your sentences.
- Day 4 and 5 – You are now ready to create your information leaflet about Queen Boudicca. Start by reminding yourself of the features of non-fiction writing.
us2-e-016-all-about-text-features-powerpoint_ver_6
Now make your leaflet. You can make a simple leaflet or use one of the bookmaking examples in the attached document (the second one might be best) You can now copy out the text you prepared over the last two days and include other features of a non-fiction text
such as pictures, captions, labels and maybe even a contents page.

We look forward to seeing your leaflets.
Reading- Children should continue to read non-fiction texts. These can be traditional books or e-books (see link below).
Try asking your child one of the following questions;
- What features of an information book can you see? (e.g heading, sub-heading, contents page, photograph, diagram, caption, label.)
- Can you write three questions then answer them using the book?
- How would you use the contents page to help you?
- Why has the author set out the book in this way?
- Is the layout of the page helpful to you in finding information? Why?

We can see that many children are using mathletics regularly. This is an excellent way of practicing their number skills. We would like to remind you that we have a trial (until 23rd June) for the numbots and times tables rockstars websites and all children have been issued with a log-in and password. These sites do not seem to be being used regularly – please get in contact if your child is not able to access the sites.
Science
We have loved seeing photographs of your plants. Keep looking after them and recording progress in your diaries.
Follow this science lesson from the Oak Academy trust on the parts and functions of a flower.
History/Art
Now that you have designed your Roman Shield you can make your own shield using cardboard. Here is a picture of last year’s Waterloo Bridge Class using their shields on our Roman dress up day during happier times. Blackfriars class had the more traditional red shields!

When we are at school we complete a ‘daily mile’ everyday to ensure children are staying active. We would like to encourage the children to continue with this ‘daily mile’ at home – this does not need to be running/ walking, it could include jumping, dancing, skipping etc. Anything that keeps the children active for 15 minutes. Please see the following leaflet:
