This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will begin a new unit of work on money.
  • In English we will be creating an advertising campaign for our muesli. We will start by making posters.
  • In science we will continue our work on skeletons.
  • In RE we will prepare for our visit to St Andrew’s Church.

Week Beginning 1st July 2019

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will consolidating our year 3 learning about time. Focusing on telling the time to the nearest minute and converting units of time.
  • In English we will be continuing our class text-The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.
  • In science we will learn about electrical circuits and naming the components.
  • In topic time we will learn about mummification.
  • In R.E we will be continuing Judaism.

A huge congratulations to Junaid who made it through to the sprint final at Croydon Arena last week as well as Bianca who made it to the semis.

Children will continue their learning about poems and this week focus on ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. Children will plan, write and edit their own poems.

 

Maths

Children will continue their learning about money and revisit their learning about time.

Children will handle coins and recognise their value, make the same amount in different ways. ( For e.g. 10 p = 5 p + 5p / 2p +2p +2p + 2p +2p / 1p x 10p / 5p + 2p +2p +2p +1p ). Children will also learn to make totals.

History

Children will develop their knowledge and understanding about changes within living memory. They will have an interactive workshop of toys and household objects from the past – e.g. mangle, chamber pot, carpet beater, teddy bears, wooden toys…

Science

Children will observe seasonal changes ‘Summer’ and describe weather patterns, plants, animals and understand how day length varies as well as leisure activities.

Geography

Children will name, locate and identify characteristics of the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas on Maps-Atlas work.

P.E

Children will continue to develop their skipping skills. The will develop an understanding of safe landing while jumping and skipping. They will also master core strength with a range of balances.

PSHE

Children will learn to talk about their feelings. Discussion about relationships and changes.

R.E

Children will develop their understanding about the basic principles of Islam.

This week our learning will be as follows;

  • In mathematics we will revise our learning on multiplication and division. We will multiply and divide two digit numbers by one digit numbers and use our skills to solve problems.
  • In English we will begin a unit on persuasive writing. We will learn about the features of advertisements.
  • In science we will learn about the human skeleton.
  • In topic time we will learn how germs spread.
  • In RE we will learn about our local church.

Writing
Last Friday we were lucky enough to be paid a visit by Ranger Russ and some of his animal friends. We met some snakes, scorpians and other animals. On Monday we will be planning a recount about the afternoon which we will be writing on Tuesday.
On Wednesday we will be finally be starting our final unit on The Fisherman and his Wife.

Maths

We are continuing to recap all strands of the maths curriculum. We will be looking at shape this week.

Geography / science

We will be consolidating our understanding of habitats around the world using maps with different animals on them. For example, your children should now know that a polar bear cannot live in a desert habitat and why. We will also be consolidating locating and naming the seven continents and five oceans of the world (this time without an atlas)!

Science

We will also be looking at how humans can keep healthy e.g diet, hygiene and exercise.

Thursday 11th July at the Old Whitgiftian’s Sports Club. Please return the yellow slips if you have not done so already.

Picnic

You should have received a letter on Friday about a picnic on Monday 22nd July.

Writing

We will be writing our own police reports before moving onto our new key text: The Fisherman and His Wife. Thank you for reading this with your children over the half term; it will really benefit our learning.

Maths

We will be recapping money (finding different combinations to make the same amount and problem solving), recapping time and problem solving with fractions.

Art

We are hoping to link our work on hot and cold colours to geography and will be looking at hot and cold countries in relation to the equator.

Geography / science

We will be exploring the Arctic habitat. We will also be looking at how humans can keep healthy e.g diet, hygiene and exercise.

Theme: The Farm

LITERACY:

Book Focus: Farmer Duck by Martin Wadell

The children will enjoy this delightfully engaging and slightly quirky tale about a very hardworking duck and an incredibly lazy Farmer. It will contribute well to our discussions this week about working well as a team and how we can help each other to build a stronger class team. Also it will serve as a wonderful introduction to our learning about farm life ahead of our trip to Godstone Farm next week.

UW – Knowledge and Understanding of the World During the next two weeks we will explore the different animals that live on farms. The children will learn to identify similarities and difference between adult and young farm animals and between farm animals and pets or wild animals.

MATHS: This week we focus on patterns and shapes. Naming and talking about properties of shapes and making and explaining patterns of different types.

PE: Athletics – taking on roles of being athletes, spectators, coaches and starters in different athletics events [/dropshadowbox]
