It has been a fantastic first full week of school and we are delighted that the children have shown such enthusiasm for learning new routines.

You will have received your child’s login details to set up their Google Classroom account. Please set this up as soon as possible so you can access home learning resources  for your child and much more. We use this platform to post videos and messages to support your child’s learning at home.

If you have any problems setting up your child’s Google Classroom account, please contact the classteachers at reception@howard.croydon.sch.uk.

Kind Regards,

The Reception Team

The children quickly settled into their morning teacher-led group activities, which  included a rotation of the following short sessions:

  • Phonics to develop letter-sound recognition and letter formation
  • Dough disco to develop fine motor skills and
  • Physical exercise to develop balance, core strength and gross motor skills.

This was followed by a freeflow session, including a free choice snack table, where the children were encouraged to choose when they want to have a fruit snack and milk. Choosing their own activities is an important stage to develop your child’s sense of independence. We kindly ask that you discuss this with your child and encourage them to try as many of the different activities in the setting as they can during freeflow.

After a hearty lunch, the children engaged in short teacher-led number sense sessions where we sang some familiar number songs and rhymes. We also held our first Reception assembly to discuss the concept of  ’emotions’ and how feeleings can change. We introduced the colour zones of the Zones of Regulation. To find out more about the Zones of Regulation, please refer to the Parent Information section on Google Classroom.

We ended our first full week with the children meeting their Year 6 reading buddy. Each Reception child was paired with a Year 6 child who will be their buddy during this year. Every Friday afternoon, the children will meet with their reading buddy, who will read with them. This week they received a special gift made by their buddy to introduce themselves to your child.

It really has been a wonderful first week of school and we look forward to more of the same routines next week.
