Our topic for the half term is Shaping Up. This is a topic which integrates learning in science, PE and personal, health and social education. The children will learn about their bodies and how to stay healthy. This topic has particular relevance this year.[/dropshadowbox]

This week our learning will be as follows.

English

Spelling – Investigate homophones (two or more words with the same pronunciation but different spelling). Use the spell zone website for learning ideas and games.

Narrative – Today we begin a new unit of work based on the book, Dream Big by Deloris Jordan.

Day 1 -Look at  front cover of Dream Big by Deloris Jordan. Make notes on what you noticed (e.g author, type of book, subject of book, author). Write a sentence predicting what you think the book will be about.

Day 2- Listen to reading of first 5 pages of Dream Big. Has this changed your view of what the book will be about. Write some questions you would like to ask Michael.

Day 3 – Listen to reading of next pages of 6 Dream Big. What do you think Michael’s mum would say when Michael said he wanted to be a champion. If possible, act out the conversation between Michael and his mother Deloris with a member of your family. Now write out a conversation. Don’t forget to use inverted commas (speech marks).

Day 4 – Listen to the final reading of Dream Big. (Reading to follow). Look at the following quotes from Michael Jordan

  1. I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.
  2. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.
  3. Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.

Think about your own dreams for the future. Write some sentences about your dreams and how you will make them happen.

Day 5 – Use the internet to find out about Michael Jordan. Make a spider diagram of key facts you have learned.

Reading

We are continuing to set appropriate leveled books for each child using Reading Planet. The child should use their first name as their log-in and their class name as their password (either Blackfriars or Waterloo).  They will need the centre ID 211526. The website address is;

Mathematics

This week we are revisiting our unit on addition and subtraction. We have covered this in class, so will be good to see how much the children can remember. In year 3 children are expected to be able to add and subtract numbers with up to 3-digits using formal written methods. Please watch the videos and then complete the worksheets below.

Continue to look after your plant and keep your diary up to date.

Topic

Start by watching this video clip.

Use the internet to find out about the spread of germs and why it is important to wash our hands and keep things clean. Make a hygiene poster to promote keeping things clean and washing hands.

RE

RE – Pentecost Sunday is on 31st May. Your child can find out about Pentecost using the PowerPoint below.

The children can then make a paper helicopter using either using the template below or by folding and cutting a plain piece of paper.

Paper Helicopter

They can then using flame colours (red, yellow and orange) to decorate their helicopter. They will need something heavy (e.g a paper clip) for the bottom of their helicopter. We celebrate the children’s languages as part of their learning about Pentecost. How many languages can your child speak as they drop their helicopter?
