Welcome to Cannon Street Class

Class Teacher: Mr C Grundey (Year Group Lead)

Teaching Assistant: Miss Campbell

Homework:

Handed out on Fridays,

Returned by Wednesday,

Please remember that homework is an important building stone in the child’s learning and development. The children will receive Dojo-Points for completed homework as well as particularly outstanding contributions.

Daily Reading:

To help further develop the children’s reading and academic development, please support and encourage the children to read daily for at least 10 minutes. This daily reading should then be recorded (title + pages) in the Learning Diary. We would kindly ask parents to sign/initial the record.

The children will receive Dojo-Points for daily reading.

Recommended reading books for Year 5:

Best Books for Year 5 | Ages 9-10 | BooksForTopics

Expertly selected books for 9 and 10 year old children (lovereading4kids.co.uk)

Reading Activities:

Once the children have completed reading a book, they then choose an activity related to the book (e.g. book-review, letter to the author, sequel, character profile, alternative cover etc.). This activity is completed in the child’s Reading Journal. Our wonderful teaching assistants will then check, feedback and record the completion of these activities.

The children will receive multiple Dojo-Points to reward exceptional work.

PE:

Our current P.E. days are Tuesday (Miss Handley) and Wednesday (Mr Grundey).

Sorry to double up, but some people might miss the information otherwise.

Homework:

Homelearning – Week 23rd March 2020

March 23, 2020

Good morning all,

While we have our little, spikey visitor around and are required to stay at home, which is for everyone’s best, let’s not pull each-other’s hair out, but establish a routine that is as close to normal life as possible.

To avoid a classblog littered with thousands of messages from us, we will try to keep things as clear and straight forward as possible. Firstly, we will upload a weekly timetable which you can follow as closely as you wish. Then, for each lesson, we will upload a short instruction/overview and then a task-sheet. This does not have to be printed, but can be answered on paper or on the notepad from class-dojo which can then be submitted to us.

Class-Dojo: This morning, we are inviting all parents up to Class-Dojo which makes communication easier and quicker, allows children to build up a portfolio and enables us to see what the children have done as they can upload documents, pictures and videos. Class-Dojo conforms with GDPR regulations and is perfectly safe (closed circle of participants in a class). It works as follows:

  1. Download the ClassDojo app.
  2. Open app and tap ‘Parent’ to create a parent account.
  3. Enter name, email & create a password.
  4. Tap ‘Add child (+)’ and use this code: … (we will text the code to you / class-dojo will send you  a link with instructions within the next 30mins)

Any questions, please just ask using Class-Dojo or our email address: howardyear5@gmail.com. Please only use this for relevant correspondences. We will endeavor to respond within 24 hours.

Daily PE routines are essential (we have not timetabled them – sorry). Here is the homelearning link of the programme that we are using. Just click on the link and log in. Then, on the top left-hand side is a menu called Dashboard, simply click on it and choose Real Play where another field/button called Home appears. After clicking on it, you may choose any theme/topic. We will leave this for you to explore and choose rather than dictating which one to do.

The website address is: home.jasmineactive.com
Parent email: parent@howardprim-1.com
Password: howardprim

Please bare with us this morning, as we are trying to organise the day and week. By 1pm, today’s Math, English and Art should be up.

Kind regards,

The Year 5 team

Since we are all gearing up for Year 6 – and the time will fly quicker than expected -, here is a link with a Grammar Glossary and examples:

Home-Learning & Distance Learning

March 18, 2020

Dear all,

As you will be aware, today, the decision was made to close the schools from next week, which means that Friday will be our last school day before the Easter Holidays.

Today the children present in Year 5 received a home learning pack in anticipation of the closure. Over the next two days, the children who attend school, will have normal lessons as much as possible. Parallel to that, we will prepare the class blogs to replace the classroom from next week. This means the following:

  • Maths: From Monday, we intend to teach via the blog. This means, we will upload the slides as .pdf, .ppt or videos as well as the worksheets (.doc / .odt) so that they can be completed on the sheet and returned to school when we next see each other.
  • Spelling and English will be set on a regular basis (1x to 3x per week) depending on our commitments elsewhere.
  • Science: The children will gradually be set different projects (e.g. create a biography of a chosen Scientist). Details will be released on a weekly basis.
  • Art: Examples or videos will be uploaded weekly together with a range of suggested activities.
  • Spanish: Please visit https://www.languageangels.com/schools/ as often as possible, log-in (username is your class name in lower case and password is howard) and then complete a range of activities starting with Las frutas. (Further activities and topics will gradually be released.)
  • PE: Together with your parent, explore ways of doing PE inside and during short stays outside (remember to keep a distance of 2m+). Have a look at: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2020/mar/17/how-to-make-a-home-gym-from-household-items-while-self-isolating
  • ICT, History and Geography: Any resources will be uploaded weekly together with suggestions for further studies/activities.

Please remain calm (which is easier said than done), make the best of your time and most of all, use the many learning opportunities. We can’t wait to read some books that we can share with you later.

Remember that you are creating History.
