THIS WEEK’S LEARNING
TOPIC: Summer’s here!
This week’s themes: Growing
Book Focus: Jasper’s Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth
CROSS CURRICULAR LEARNING:
This week we will be exploring several opportunities for cross curricular learning using our book focus as stimulus for discussion.
- We will review the children’s understanding of key concepts of shape, space and measure during this week. The children will have opportunities to measure their height and compare to their height at the beginning of their Reception year.
- We will talk about changes as we grow. We would like the children to reflect on the things they were able to do when they were very young and what they can do now, comparing pictures of themselves as babies and what they look like now.
- The children will grow their own bean plant, taking responsibility for looking after it each day and make observations of the changes as it grows
PHONICS: The children continue to work in groups for Phonics securing their recognition of Phase 3 sounds and skills for blending decodable words accurately. Phonics lessons also focus on teaching children the skills for reading and writing simple sentences. Some of the groups have started learning the Phase 4 skills for reading words containing 4 or more sounds.
READING AT SCHOOL
During guided group reading sessions the children are working on key skills for reading such as finger pointing under each word to keep track of words; using picture clues and sound blending to decode unfamiliar words. We are also assessing children’s understanding of what they have read. We will also encourage children to use their ‘storyteller voice’ when they read, using expression and taking notice of basic punctuation such as full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.
READING AT HOME
Please continue to write a comment in your child’s yellow reading diary and let us know how they are getting on with their reading at home. Please ensure that books are in book bags on the days listed below.
KEY WORD LISTS and CHANGING READING BOOKS:
We change books and check key words on these days:
Monday – Red group
Tuesday – Orange group
Wednesday – Yellow group
Thursday – Green group

Have a great week!

The children are very excited about our new role play ice cream van and are enjoying the experience of selling and buying pretend ice cream and ice lollies. So this week we will focus on developing their skills for solving real life mathematical problems which involve using the language of addition and subtraction. eg. I bought 5 ice lollies from the ice cream van but it was a very hot day and 2 ice lollies melted before I got home. How many ice lollies did I have left?
WOW CARD: Please create your own similar real life mathematical challenges for your child to solve and let us know how they get on with these at home by completing a wow card.
PD – Health and Self Care
As part of Healthy Schools Week we will be discussing healthy food choices and talking about how exercise affects our body. During the PE lesson the children will participate in a circuit of athletic activities.
