Week beginning 25th March

March 25, 2019

Writing

This week we are hoping to start writing our innovated prequels and endings for Julia Donaldson’s story Monkey Puzzle. The children will be able to keep the middle part of the story as it was. We will be encouraging the children to think about what baby monkey has learnt from his experiences.

Maths

We will be continuing with our work on time. We will be looking at time facts and using them to problem solve. We will also be looking at and comparing durations of time. Please work on these at home.

An example of a reasoning activity could be: convince me that three quarters of an hour is greater than 30 minutes. For this, the children need to know how many minutes there are in an hour and use their knowledge of fractions/ other time facts to support their thinking.

We will also be completing our length assessment.

 History

We are continuing with our work on Neil Armstrong and the Race to Space. We will be writing diary entries to link with literacy.

Science

We will be continuing our work on plants. We have been observing how well the seeds we planted have been growing.

PE

We have students from Archbishop Tennison’s doing activities with the children this half term.

Other information

On Monday we will be out at Duppas Hill for a KS1 cross country event (weather permitting).

Sorry for the error with the font. I am unsure what has happened and am trying to fix it!

The Science MuseumThank you to those of you who offered to help on our trip to The Science Museum last week. We had a great time despite the high winds, rain and amount of walking!

Writing

We will be starting the week with some drama. The children will be acting in the role of ‘monkey experts’, giving the audience clues about how best to find mummy monkey. We will also be having a guided reading style session about the text before moving on to making missing posters for mummy monkey. The focus will be on using descriptive language to describe her character and appearance.

Maths

We will be solving problems using the four operations. For example: Jenny has 17cm of ribbon. She needs 25cm for her project. How many more cm does she need?

This is how you could use a bar model to represent and solve the problem.

On Tuesday we will be completing our fractions assessment before moving onto our next unit: time. Our objectives are recognising half past and o’clock, quarter past and quarter to and five minute intervals.

It is very important that you practice telling the time with your child at home as it is a skill that children often find difficult to consolidate. We thank you in advance for your support with this.
