A creative map-making & Geography task

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”curled” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#bde2fa” border_width=”2″ border_color=”#7e3b18″ ]Good morning all,[/dropshadowbox]

After some of the Y5s were my guinea pigs, I would like as many children and families as possible from our school to trial something really exciting. This is based on an online tool called “Digimaps for Schools” by the University of Edinburgh.

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e1ecb7″ border_width=”2″ border_color=”#185e7e” ]Thank you Damara, Emiliana, Bianca, Lillian and James in Year 5 for giving it a good go.[/dropshadowbox]

Your task is to plan and document a walk you are going to undertake as a daily exercise. The steps I would like you to include are:

        • Go for a walk and take photographs of interesting sights.

        • Back at home, log-on to Digimaps.

        • Create a map for the local area you have taken your walk in.

        • Draw in the walk (draw lines in sections or as a whole; double-click for sections).

        • Pin in your home.

        • Measure the distance between the different parts of the walk.

        • After your walk, upload the photos into the right place on your map in Digimaps. (Remember to save.)

        • Save your map in your class-folder on Digimaps under your first name and the date (e.g. Max-17052020)

Here is the video instruction on how it works:

Have fun.

Thank you very much and happy half-term.

International Bee Day

Happy “International Bee Day” to everybody.

Did you know that bees are crucial when it comes to producing our food?

Did you know that during her life, a bee collects only 1/12 of a tea spoon full of honey?

Did you know that social-distancing is impossible for bees as in the height of the summer, a beehive houses far over 30.000 bees?

Day 2- Compare and Order fractions
Day 3-Add and Subtract fractions
Day 4-Mixed addition and subtraction
Day 5- Friday Challenge
Here are the video links for each day too.
Don’t forget that there will be Mathletics tasks to do as well for the week!  Well done to all of you who are completing those when you can too.  They will continue to help build your fluency and reasoning skills as well.

Science –

Scientist cartoon Royalty Free Vector Image - VectorStock

Have a look at the Curious Creature presentation (where it says ‘discuss with a partner’, just have a think on your own or talk to an adult about it).
Then have a go at matching the animal picture with its classification description.
Once you have done that-it’s time to get creative.  Create your own creature-start by thinking about its classification and think what features it will need to have. Complete the Curious Creature sheet.  the more creative you can be, the better.  Have fun!

English writing

Day 1 – Write a diary entry as Wallace at the beginning of the sketch.

Day 2 – What are the key features of the ‘Snoozatron’? Why have they been specifically chosen?

Day 3 – Create an advert for the ‘Snoozatron’.

Day 4 – Write a diary entry as Gromit after the eventful night.

Day 5 – What key features could you add to the ‘Snoozatron’? Explain why they would be useful. (E.g. Hot chocolate and marshmallows, lavender spray, white noise…)

Challenge – Create your own cracking contraption for helping to get a good nights sleep. (This could be in the form of an explanation text or a detailed, labelled diagram).

Day 2 – Write the dialogue between Fox and Dr. Hammer adding correct punctuation.

Welcome to VE Week!

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#a0d3fe” border_width=”10″ border_color=”#f91414″ ]To celebrate VE Day (on Friday 8th May) we have decided to theme this week’s around the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day that marked the end of World War II, and was the day on which allied forces announced the surrender of Germany in Europe. [/dropshadowbox]

From VEDay75.org:

When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved – ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II.

The 75th anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period. To commemorate this important time we are organising VE Day 75, a three-day international celebration that will take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020.

We would like to try to create a ‘feelgood’ video of our Year 6s! We were thinking about how we could tie this into our VE Day celebrations, in line with what’s going on at the moment. We would like the children to film themselves lip syncing along to the lyrics of Vera Lynn’s we’ll meet again (in the video above). Please send your video clips to howardprimaryyear6@gmail.com to take part. This video submission will also act as permission to publish on our Howard Primary School website.

PE –

During World War 2, dance halls became very popular. Lindy hop was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston. The Lindy hop became popular as it was introduced as a result of the American soldiers travelling over to Britain. Why don’t you have a go at practising some of the basic steps?
