Our learning this week.
English
At Howard Primary School we have adopted Read Write Inc Phonics.
RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.
When using RWI to read the children will:
- Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
- Learn to read words using Fred Talk
- Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out
- Show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

- recognising the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (10s, 1s)
- identifying, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
- comparing and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
- reading and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
- using place value and number facts to solve problems.

Dream Big
This term we continue our Project with the National Literacy Trust about giving children opportunities to think about their future goals, exposing them to a range of careers, challenging stereotypical roles, ensuring they understand the importance of reading, writing, speaking & listening as well as maths in the work place. We started this programme in 2019 Summer – Check out the website below .
In 2020, with the help of parents, family, friends & local businesses Mrs Ramakrishnan did the programme on Class Dojo across the two classes. This Year our school has been chosen to participate in this amazing programme. Very exciting !
WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR…
We have discussed and written about our ambitions , aspirations and Dream jobs.
We have met Alice who leads the programme at the National Literacy Trust on our Google Class meet.
We have met three people using our Google classroom meet. We have learnt about their jobs and asked them questions as well as written about them.
Adam who is in charge of IT security at Virgin Bank.
Jasmin who is an investment banker at Virgin Bank.
Moira who supports small businesses by dealing with Business loans.
We have also had Assemblies about jobs different people do in different places – school, hospital, farm…
We have also read different books about a range of jobs and will be involved in drama & role-play this week…
