Dear Parents / carers

If you are learning from home while isolating, please check Google Classroom daily. If your child is in school, you DO NOT need to do the Google class learning.

Homework will be sent home in your child’s yellow Home work book usually on a Friday and will need to be returned on Wednesday except for this week as it is a short week next week. There is usually a piece of work related to topic as well as spellings to learn and words to read according to your child’s Phonic groups. Please return book promptly on Wednesday as we need to isolate it before sending the new homework out on Friday. Thank you for your continued support to keep your children and all staff safe by adhering to our safety guidelines.

Homework will also  posted on Google classroom ONLY for children isolating.

Reading Books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Please ensure you make a comment or sign and only then will we change the reading book.

DREAM BIG Programme

This term we start a new Project with the National Literacy Trust about giving children opportunities to think about their future goals, exposing them to a range of careers, challenging stereotypical roles, ensuring they understand the importance of reading, writing, speaking & listening as well as maths in the work place. We started this programme in 2019 Summer – Check out the website below .

https://literacytrust.org.uk/programmes/words-for-work/words-work-dream-big/exploring-world-work-howard-primary-school/

In 2020, with the help of parents, family, friends & local businesses Mrs Ramakrishnan did the programme on Class Dojo across the two classes. This Year our school has been chosen to participate in this amazing programme. Very exciting !

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR…

We have discussed and written about our ambitions , aspirations and Dream jobs.

We have met Alice who leads the programme at the National Literacy Trust on our Google Class meet.

We have met three people using our Google classroom  meet. We have learnt about their jobs and asked them questions as well as written about them.

Adam who is in charge of IT security at Virgin Bank.

Jasmin who is an investment banker at Virgin Bank.

Moira who supports small businesses by dealing with Business loans.

We have also had Assemblies about jobs different people do in different places – school, hospital, farm…

We have also read different books about a range of jobs and will be involved in drama & role-play this week…

Our learning this week… It is a short week as we finish school on Wednesday for our Easter Break.

Phonics :

At Howard Primary School we have adopted Read Write Inc Phonics. RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write. When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out.
  • Show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.
