Science

We are learning about the Seasons –  Summer. Science is linked to English this week.

How do we know it is Summer? What months are Summer months? What is the weather like? What plants, flowering tress do we see? What clothes do we wear? How do we keep ourselves busy – what leisure activities do we do      ( go to the beach, play in the garden, maybe usually we could be going on a holiday – unfortunately not this year) ? What do you notice about the length of the day?

Link : https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkvv4wx/articles/zcx3gk7

Activities

Activity 1: Can you make a Summer poster with facts and pictures? – weather, plants, animals, clothes, safety in the Summer sun, fun activities to do, length of the day.

Activity 2 – what can you see when you go for a nature walk in Summer? :

Sheet: Summer nature walk

Activity 3 : Can you design a Staying safe in the Sun poster?

Dream Big Project

Last year Year 1 was involved with this project with the National Literacy Trust. It is about enabling children to Dream Big and think about careers they would love to have and work towards it.

Dream big sheet 1

Check out the link to see how we did the project.

But this year we are delivering it using the class Dojo.

Check out this story about Fire fighters.

Here’s a fun song about careers… Sing along !

Please let your child watch the different videos of an amazing range of  careers of our parents as well as others. Check out the different jobs and post your children’s responses. Enjoy!

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”20″ border_color=”#dddddd” ] Our topic for this term is ‘Puppet on a String’ and is based on history. It focuses on changes within living memory. Children will begin to understand and use words and phrases relating to the passing of time. We have learnt about toys and household objects in the past and compared it to the same in modern times and continue with learning about schools a hundred years ago and compare it to schools in the present day.

History:

This week, we are looking at two aspects of the past and comparing it to modern life – household items as well as school life.

Schools – In the past schools were very strict, all children sat in rows, teachers used black boards and chalk. Children used slates and chalk. They also had ink bottles , pens and blotting paper to absorb the surplus ink before turning a page. They did not have all the fun resources we use in school now – Interactive White boards linked to the internet, white boards, colouring pencils, felt tip pens, computers, maths resources…

Did you know Howard Primary School was built in 1897 and opened in April 1898? That is 122 years ago…

Check out this picture of a classroom from the past. Now, compare it to your class room. What is same, what is different?

English:

We have a new focus text called Lima’s Red Hot Chilli by David Mills

Please listen to the story and enjoy it. Think about the sequence of events.

Activity 1 – Make a list of the different food items in the story and discuss adjectives, noun phrases used by author.

 – Chn make a list of 3 food items they like – draw them and describe it using noun phrases, expanded noun phrases

Eg Cool, creamy ice-cream

Ripe, red  strawberries

Wobbly, orange jelly

Activity 2 – Plan and write a story using same pattern – Think of a title, beginning, sequence similar events in the middle and ending.

*Children can create own character and decide on one food they take secretly – eg pickled gherkins, spicy sausage, jalapeno peppers, spicy chicken wings, spicy meatballs, Mexican chicken, samosas. Marmite, lemon

*What other food will the main character try?

Eg – stale, brown bread/ cold, slimy pasta/ ripe, squidgy bananas / hard boiled sweets, cold, hard pizza slice

*Who are the different characters who will help the main character and what do they use – yoghurt, cream, ice, water, sugar, ice cream, sweets, chocolate…

*Ending.
