Our topic for this term is ‘Puppet on a String’ and is based on history. It focuses on changes within living memory. Children will begin to understand and use words and phrases relating to the passing of time. We have learnt about toys and household objects in the past and compared it to the same in modern times and continue with learning about schools a hundred years ago and compare it to schools in the present day.

History
This week, we are looking at two aspects of the past and comparing it to modern life – household items as well as school life.
Schools – In the past schools were very strict, all children sat in rows, teachers used black boards and chalk. Children used slates and chalk. They also had ink bottles , pens and blotting paper to absorb the surplus ink before turning a page. They did not have all the fun resources we use in school now – Interactive White boards linked to the internet, white boards, colouring pencils, felt tip pens, computers, maths resources…
Did you know Howard Primary School was built in 1897 and opened in April 1898? That is 122 years ago…
Check out this picture of a classroom from the past. Now, compare it to your class room. What is same, what is different?
Link : https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqhyb9q/articles/z39wjxs
Activity 1 : Compare schools from long ago with schools now – use the sheet below.
Household objects – Children in Lambeth class who completed the activities below, please DO NOT repeat.
Look at the household objects from the past… Have a guess what they are ! What do you think they are used for? What is it made of? Now, think what we use to do the same job in the house.

Wobbly, orange jelly
Activity 2 – Plan and write a story using same pattern – Think of a title, beginning, sequence similar events in the middle and ending.
*Children can create own character and decide on one food they take secretly – eg pickled gherkins, spicy sausage, jalapeno peppers, spicy chicken wings, spicy meatballs, Mexican chicken, samosas. Marmite, lemon
*What other food will the main character try?
