We are pleased to welcome your child to Waterloo Bridge class and are grateful for your help and support.

Recommended reading books for Year 3:

Best Books for Year 3 | Ages 7-8 | BooksForTopics

Expertly selected books for 7 and 8 year old children (lovereading4kids.co.uk)

Reading

Children are asked to read at home on a daily basis and their book should be brought to school each day. It is helpful if parents can comment regularly in their child’s Reading Record, particularly when their child has finished their book. Children are responsible for changing and selecting their own books in the morning.

Homework

Children will be given homework each Friday to be handed in by the following Tuesday. Children are also asked to learn spellings and times tables at home. They are responsible for recording their homework in their homework diary.

Other

Children are asked to bring to school a water bottle. They should have a waterproof coat when it is raining or the forecast is for rain.

A creative map-making & Geography task

May 26, 2020

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”curled” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#bde2fa” border_width=”2″ border_color=”#7e3b18″ ]Good morning all,[/dropshadowbox]

After some of the Y5s were my guinea pigs, I would like as many children and families as possible from our school to trial something really exciting. This is based on an online tool called “Digimaps for Schools” by the University of Edinburgh.

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#e1ecb7″ border_width=”2″ border_color=”#185e7e” ]Thank you Damara, Emiliana, Bianca, Lillian and James in Year 5 for giving it a good go.[/dropshadowbox]

Your task is to plan and document a walk you are going to undertake as a daily exercise. The steps I would like you to include are:

        • Go for a walk and take photographs of interesting sights.

        • Back at home, log-on to Digimaps.

        • Create a map for the local area you have taken your walk in.

        • Draw in the walk (draw lines in sections or as a whole; double-click for sections).

        • Pin in your home.

        • Measure the distance between the different parts of the walk.

        • After your walk, upload the photos into the right place on your map in Digimaps. (Remember to save.)

        • Save your map in your class-folder on Digimaps under your first name and the date (e.g. Max-17052020)

Here is the video instruction on how it works:

Have fun.

Thank you very much and happy half-term.

Week Beginning 25th May

May 24, 2020

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#f6f134″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Eid Mubarak to those families who are celebrating. We hope that all families also enjoy the bank holiday Monday. It is half term this week so we are not setting daily maths and English learning. However we have put together some activities. [/dropshadowbox]

Reading

It is great to see that so many children have been able to keep up with their reading. We have now set up accounts for the children on the Rising Stars website. This means we can access suitable leveled books for each child from the Reading Planet online library. There are comprehension questions that the children can answer at the end of each week and there are quizzes which the children can complete and gain awards. The child should use their first name as their log-in and their class name as their password (either Blackfriars or Waterloo).  They will need the centre ID 211526. The website address is;

https://my.risingstars-uk.com/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Guidance can be found at;

Mathematics

The children have done great work on multiplication and division this week and should keep learning their times tables. The following websites will be useful;

https://login.mathletics.com/

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://play.numbots.com/#/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

The children should all have passwords for the mathletics and  times tables rockstars sites. They can use their times tables rockstars site to access the numbots site.

Topic Work

After half term our topic is Shaping up. We will learn about our bodies and about how to keep fit. We will also learn about the basketball player Michael Jordan.  Over the holiday children can find out about a sportsperson of their choice. They can then draw, paint or write sentences about their sportsperson or even make a model of them.

Science

Keep taking care of your plant and recording progress in your diary. Use the video lesson below to find out about the life cycle of a plant.

Music

Children may enjoy following this lesson from Croydon Music Service.

[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”lifted-both” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#eef340″ border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]You will know from the news that primary schools in England are making preparation for a partial opening, but that year 3 children need to continue to work from home for a while longer. We miss all the children very much but are pleased that we have seen examples of some great home learning. Keep up the good work.[/dropshadowbox]
