Our topic for this term is ‘Puppet on a String’ and is based on history. It focuses on changes within living memory. Children will begin to understand and use words and phrases relating to the passing of time. We will be learning about toys and household objects in the past and compare it to the same in modern times.

History
We start the topic by first discussing changes with the toys we play with. Look at a picture of you as a baby. Ask your parents what toys did you like and what did you play with as a baby.
Now look at yourself in the mirror. Think about the changes . What toys do you like to play with and why?

Our focus in English, for the next few weeks is on poetry. We will start by reading ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough.
Listen to the poet reading it as well as the fun link. Have you ever thought of what our world would be without any sounds? A stranger coming into your house and stealing all the sounds. Just imagine that!
Link 1 :
Link 2 :
Activity 1 : Read the poem and just enjoy it.
Activity 2 : Think of the places you have been – class, park, zoo, farm, shopping centre. What sounds will you hear? Make a list.
Eg. At the farm – a list
the baaing of the sheep
the brrr of the tractor
the barking of the dog
At the school
the laughter of the children
the ringing of the bell
the clapping of hands
You can use the sheet as a template : Planning sheet
Activity 3 : Can you choose two places from your planning and write your own sound poem just like The Sound Collector but using the sounds from two settings you choose.
You can use the sheet to write the poem on.: Sound Collector poem sheet
