Southwark Class News Week Beginning 2nd October
Here is a breakdown of what we will be looking at over the coming week:
English- We will be continuing to think about instruction writing which will lead into an explanation text describing how to draw Horrid Henry..
Maths- We are focusing on place value, extending our knowledge to include numbers in the thousands and different ways to represent and partition them. We will be continuing to extend our thinking to include 4-digit numbers and will continue to focus on reasoning and explanation.
Spelling- Our focus this week in class are the prefixes un and im. We will be thinking of as many words as we can such as unkind, impossible and impractical and practising our spelling using methods such as speed spelling and hangman.
Reading- All children read with an adult at least once a week as part of a Guided Reading programme. After this adult led session they complete tasks relating to the text or linked to current English and Spelling focuses. We continue to read stories as a class.
ICT- Our topic for the half term is online safety and we are currently learning about the potential dangers of cyber bullying and this week’s focus will be ‘Netiquette’ acceptable online behaviour. If you have any concerns or queries about this subject, there are plenty of parent friendly websites to help and advise. I have included an example below.

We will be holding an extra ICT session each week to introduce the children to touch typing. Both classes were very enthusiastic about starting this last week. This a free to use course and is accessible to everyone. If you would like to continue this at home, I have included the link below.

PE- PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and children will need their PE kits. I would also like to remind you that the school policy is that all earrings should be removed, hair should be tied back and tights should be removed when getting changed. I would also ask that PE kits stay in school between Monday and Friday as occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in additional activities. This half term we will be playing invasion games and will continue to run the daily mile.
PSHE- This half term we will be thinking about new beginnings and settling into a new school year.
RE- We will be studying Judaism with a focus on Jewish celebrations. This unit will be taught on a Wednesday morning as part of ppa.
Science- Our current Science topic is teeth and digestion. This will also be taught as part of ppa.
Topic- Our topic for this term is Vikings and Anglo Saxons. This will concentrate on the period between the Viking and Anglo Saxon struggle to control Britain to the time of Edward the Confessor. Look out for an exciting letter, hopefully going home on Monday, detailing the 5 trips and visitors we have planned over the coming 2 half terms including a dress up as an Anglo-Saxon or Viking day on the 12th October. The letter includes details of how to do this simply without lots of expense and we hope proves to be an incredible learning experience for your children
French- We will be revising our conversational skills so far and then moving on to learn the numbers between 20 and 50 and learning vocabulary to describe our families.
Music- We will be learning to sing in Spanish and think about the instruments which are used and using untuned percussion to keep the beat.
Homework- Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Friday.

We collect the reading records in every week to check children are reading and would ask that you initial or sign to show they have read and make any comments you deem necessary, children should also record all independent reading they have done in the book so I am able to see that they are reading regularly. Children should feel free to keep a book for as long as they need to in order to finish reading. Children are not expected to finish a book before entering it into their reading record book but to record each occasion of reading however short. If you have any concerns about your child’s book choice, please speak to me or write me a note. In year 4, children are advised which books to take from certain areas in the book corner but are expected to make a choice from this selection themselves. [/dropshadowbox]
