English
At Howard Primary School we have adopted Read Write Inc Phonics.
RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.
When using RWI to read the children will:
- Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
- Learn to read words using Fred Talk
- Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out
- Show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

We will focus on addition and subtraction.
- Understanding 10 more and 10 less
- Add and subtract tens
- Add a 1 digit number to a 2 digit number (bridging)

If 1 ten is removed, then they will be left with 84.

The place value chart shows the number 23. 4 ones were added to the number 23, taking the total to 27.

Our topic this term is materials.
Recycling
We will think of reasons why recycling is important and how they can begin to reduce the non-waste we produce. They help each other think of alternatives and ways to avoid waste, including helping others in their school and the wider community.

When reading with your child at home ask them questions related to their book.

Hungerford Class
Isabella H – for always following the 5cs and making an effort to present her work in a neat, tidy manner.
Dakshakkavin – for setting a wonderful example for other members of the class to follow. He always tries hard in his learning making sure he uses resources to further expand his learning.
Westminster Class
Hamish – for trying hard to follow class and school rules as well as having great responses to reading.
Amelia- Rose – for persevering with maths work even if she finds it challenging. She is gaining so much confidence
