Week beginning 18th December 2017
The final three days of the autumn term will be very busy and filled with fun! However, we will still be doing literacy and maths.
This week we will be covering the following learning objectives in:
Writing
We will be using our plans to write our nativity stories from a different perspective.
Maths
This week we have been adding two two-digit numbers (without crossing the tens boundary).
Take a look at some of the strategies we have been using…
A useful strategy for addition is:
Example: 54+21=
4 ones + 1 one= 5 ones
5 tens + 2 tens= 7 tens
__ tens + __ ones=__
This is partitioning and recombining.
Next we will be adding two two-digit numbers (crossing the tens boundary). Please see our example below (also featured on the blog last week).
Note that on the numberline representation I have shown two ways of calculating 37+27. The most efficient way is to add 20 then 3 then 4. Your child’s choice of strategy will depend on their confidence with counting in tens etc.
It seems unlikely that we will move onto subtracting two two-digit numbers before Christmas as we want to ensure that all of the children are as confident as possible with what we have looked at so far. However, a useful strategy for subtraction isExample: 79-13=
79
70 9
-10 -3
60 6
How can you help to develop your child’s number fluency?
- Continue practicing counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
- Ask them to show you what they have been doing in school.
- Practice times tables.
- Quick recall of halves and doubles (for numbers within 100)
- Partitioning numbers in different ways (e.g all of the ways to make 13).
- Give your child a number – how many more do we need to add to get to the nearest multiple of 10? What about if we were subtracting? For example: 56 (we have to add four to get to 60 or subtract 6 to get to 50). This helps them to recognise that we do not need to do individual jumps on a numberline when calculating.
- Give children a number and ask them what the value of each digit is. For example, 96 (the 9 has a value of 90 and the 6 has a value of 6).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Our class party will be on Tuesday 19th December.
Homework
I will be continuing to set homework on Mathletics. I am aware that some people have had issues with adobe flash player. This is something you need to enable on your computers. If this is the case then please let me know. I am happy for the children to complete the task after eating their lunch on Mondays (as an adult has to be there for their health and safety).
We hope that you have an enjoyable festive break and are looking forward to seeing you in the New Year!
