Week beginning 18th September 2017
In the last week, the children chose their representative to the School Council and we are pleased to announce that Emily Potter is our Class representative for school council. We are also pleased to report that Kelsey West, Ryan Ye and Reya Amin were awarded merits during Friday’s assembly.
In Maths this week, we are learning to count in steps of 2, 4 and 8. We will compare numbers using greater than, less than and equals symbol as well as solving problems using place value.
In English, we are learning to use direct speech in grammar. We will learn to write in role about a character in our writing as well as prepare a story map of a story we have read.
Spellings
Knowing how to spell words is a very important aspect of your child’s education and one that we value highly. Historically, most teachers handed out to pupils a list of words to learn to spell, on a weekly basis, which pupils were tested on at a later time. Nationally, evidence shows that good spellers consistently perform very well in their tests and poor spellers do not. In addition, even though some may score highly in tests, evidence of this standard of spelling is not always seen in their daily writing. Many experts, like us, believe that tests only test pupils’ short term memory and do not assist students in gaining spelling mastery. For this reason, although there will be on-going assessments, we will no longer be giving weekly spelling tests. Testing isn’t teaching and we want to teach pupils to become confident spellers through a variety of ways which include word study (e.g. spelling patterns and rules) and word meanings and their origins.
In Topic, we will investigate what tools were used in the Stone Age, the materials that were used and what they were used for.
In Science, we will learn about forces and magnets.
The children will have homework on Fridays and it will be due in on Wednesday, please ensure that your child submits the homework in time. The children have chosen their reading books and they should aim to read every day. The children will change their books on Wednesday and Friday and they should aim to complete a book review before they change their books.
The children have PE on Monday and Friday.
We thank you for your continued support.
