What are we learning this week?
Maths
We are focusing on column addition .
English
We shall be using the Power of Reading scheme at Howard Primary School, this year. Our core text for this half term is called Pax, by Sara Pennypacker. Because the Power of Reading relies on the element of surprise for the children, our learning objectives cannot be published in advance, but we will be focusing on analysing character, writing in role and reading aloud for debate and discussion. The children are hooked on the book already. What will happen to Peter and Pax next…?
Reading
Our year group’s class reader is Carrie’s War – by Nina Bawden. Here is a little teaser…
Carrie and her younger brother Nick are evacuated to Wales to spend the war years with the dour Mr Evans and his sister ‘Auntie’ Lou. Carrie and Nick spend much of their time at Druid’s Bottom – a mysterious house where Hepzibah, the housekeeper, tells them strange stories about skulls and curses. Carrie and Nick settle into their new lives…and then Carrie does something she’ll regret for years to come.
In our weekly reading comprehension sessions, we are focusing on skimming and scanning to answer retrieval questions.
Science
This term’s focus is Electricity. This week we will look at which components are needed to complete a circuit.
History
Our History topic, for the Autumn term, is World War Two. This week we shall be looking at key individuals and dates. We shall also be discussing some of the causes that led to the outbreak of war.
PE
Our PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children are expected to wear full PE kit into school on these days. On Tuesdays they will take part in Dance and on Wednesdays they will have Tennis.
RE
Our topic this half term is Buddhism. This week, we will be looking at the life of Siddharta Gautama.
