At Howard Primary School we have adopted The Power of Reading scheme for literacy. Our literacy work is based around a core text. The text we are working on is called Rapunzel by Bethan Woollvin.

This week we will:
- Plan a diary entry
- Write a diary entry – focusing on a change in Rapunzel
- Consider the character of Rapunzel
- Explore the features of explanatory text
Plan a diary entry
We will now be Rapunzel and plan a diary. We will use our knowledge of the story so far. After reading more of the text it’s clear that there is a change in Rapunzel’s personality. This change will be reflected when planning our diary entry.
Write a diary entry
The children will use their plan to help them write their diary. A diary is used to show thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Consider the character of Rapunzel
We will read more of the text and add to Rapunzel’s Role on The Wall.
Explore the features of explanatory text
We will look at explanatory text and we will explore the features. Next week we will write our own explanation text in order to explain to Rapunzel ways in which she can defeat the witch. Explanatory text (sometimes called an explanation) is a type of non-fiction text that explains a process (for example, how something works or why something happens)

Children will develop their understanding of different ways to make the same amount. The children will begin to see that 10p can be made using 2p, 2p, 2p, 2p and 2p or it can be made using 5p and 5p. - To compare money

Children will add together pence and pounds to find the total amount
- To find the difference between 2 amounts

When you pay someone more than needed, the money they give back to you is the change.Fo, for example, if something costs 30p and you pay with a 50p coin, they could count up in tens to see that 20p change is needed. If something costs 7p and you give them 10p, their number bonds knowledge will suggest that 10 – 7 = 3.Children will also need to become familiar with working out change from £1. Give them a scenario where they want to buy a chocolate bar costing 30p. To calculate their change, they need to work out £1 subtract 30p. They could do this using their knowledge of place value.

Geography
In Geography we are learning about continents and oceans. We are learning about continents first. Children will use atlases and maps to identify the different continents. We will think about the location of the different continents, key features of the continents and where it is in relation to other continents. Children will continue to develop their skills when using an atlas. We will focus on using an index page.

When reading with your child at home ask them questions related to their book.

Questions to ask during the reading
