Summer 1 Week 1

Week beginning 18th April 2017

THIS WEEK’S LEARNING:

TOPIC: Caring for Animals

We are all very excited about the delivery of some special eggs this week, which we hope will hatch into beautiful little ducklings.  It will be wonderful to see the excitement on the children’s faces as they watch the eggs hatch. The eggs should hatch by the end of the week and the hatchlings will remain with us for a further week. You are welcome to come in and visit them when they hatch.

LITERACY:

Book Focus: The Ugly Duckling

The children will read and discuss the key events of this popular story. It will also serve as a stimulus for discussion about kindness and caring for others and the importance of using kind words when we talk to each other.

PHONICS:

This term we will continue to review all sounds previously taught and continue to develop the children’s ability to blend independently and instantly to read words and sentences with fluency. The children will continue to be grouped for Phonics and will bring home phonics homework appropriate to their level of learning.

READING AT HOME

Please continue to write a comment in your child’s yellow reading diary and let us know how they are getting on with their reading at home.

WORD LISTS

Due to the demands of this term we will now be checking key word lists on a weekly basis (on the same day that they change their reading books)

MATHS:

This term we will develop the children’s understanding of number, shape, space and measure though practical activities which allow them to apply their mathematical knowledge. This week we will focus on counting in steps of 2. We will also introduce the concept of a half.
